EDGE Future Readiness Assessment: An Enterprise’s Guide to Building Next-generation Contingent Workforce Strategies

Enterprises are increasingly using contingent workforce programs to access scarce skills, improve agility, and respond to changing business demands. However, many organizations continue to evaluate these programs through narrow measures such as cost savings, compliance, and operational efficiency, which do not fully capture whether the program is ready to support future workforce needs.

This report introduces the EDGE Future Readiness Assessment, Everest Group’s two-axis framework for evaluating contingent workforce maturity across program outcomes and capability maturity. Based on this assessment, 90+ enterprises are positioned into four maturity segments: Early-stage, Developing, Growth, and Elite. It provides a structured view of how enterprises can assess both the value their contingent workforce programs deliver today and the capabilities needed to sustain performance in a more complex, technology-enabled, and fast-evolving workforce environment.

The report highlights why legacy maturity models fall short, how enterprise programs vary across maturity levels, and what differentiates more advanced contingent workforce programs from lower-maturity ones. It concludes with key implications for enterprises seeking to evolve their Contingent Workforce Management (CWM) programs in line with changing workforce priorities and market expectations.
